“Art should perpetuate ideas both on Nature and Humanity as subject.”
Million Birhane is a storyteller who weaves an anecdote in each of her art piece. She paints, collages, sculpts or sews her tales using paints, buttons and textiles. Her supports are usually custom-made to fit her stories. Million’s experimental works are colorful and varied just like her accounts that draw from memories, longings, spirituality and self-exploration.
Million Birhane was born on September 1989 G.C. which is a day making the Ethopian New Year. A great holiday whereby Ethiopia and Ethiopians would fancy much the uniquely known nature and feature, the yellowish flower locally named “Mesqel Flower” covers all topography of the country. It seems a good coincidence that people give due attention for such a birth at a big day and holiday. Million Birhane also shares same thought and happiness as others do. Furthermore, Million has something special and different attachment with flowers. Her love of flower looks beyond limit that she describes it poetically saying:
“Flower for me is everything. It is love, peace, melody, life, blood, color, fertility, sex, happyness, laughter and real art.”
Million Birhane is a full time studio artist and graduated (2010) from Entoto Technical and Vocational Education and Training College where she majored in sculpture. Million so far had solo exhibitions after participated in several group shows in Ethiopia and abroad. And now, this 28th exhibition is Million Birhane’s turn at Galleria Tomaca.
